Science Fairs:  Relevant in 2017 or Is it time for a change?

Does the traditional Science Fair meet the NGSS goals of authentic learning and assessment? This session will discuss how to make Science Fairs relevant again.

The tri-fold display board, the students presenting to judges, the parents relieved that it's finally over. Is this how your Science Fair looks?  Is the traditional Science Fair meeting the charges of the NGSS to provide authentic learning and assessment?  In this collaborative session, we’ll dig into ideas to redevelop the typical science fair and improve the quality of student projects. It will particularly focus on how science fairs can connect to the instruction aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and the parallels of the science fair to the ‘pitch’ that many practicing scientists have to do to secure funding and communicate their research. Learn about how teachers around the country are approaching the Science Fair of the 21st century.  We’ll also discuss state and national level competitions and opportunities to build projects around them and how to design the necessary rubrics.
